Beans & peas · warm season
Pole beans
Phaseolus vulgaris
One planting climbs all summer. Better fresh flavor than most bush types, and they keep producing after bush beans fade.
- When to plant in Ohio
- Direct sow late May at the base of a 6–8 ft trellis
- Harvest window
- July until frost
- Days to maturity
- 60–70
- Spacing
- 4–6 in. along the trellis
- Light
- Full sun
How to grow it
Set the trellis first. Sow after frost. Kentucky Wonder and Fortex are Ohio favorites. Keep picking to prevent seed-set from shutting the vine down. In wet Augusts, give them morning sun so pods dry off.
