Bush green beans

Phaseolus vulgaris

The easiest Ohio protein crop. No indoor start, no trellis, and a second sowing in July replaces tired July plants.

When to plant in Ohio
Direct sow mid-May; succession every 2–3 weeks through mid-July
Harvest window
July through September
Days to maturity
50–60
Spacing
3–4 in.; rows 18 in. apart
Light
Full sun

How to grow it

Sow 1 in. deep after soil is 60°F. Do not soak seed. Pick every other day when pods are pencil-thick and seeds are still small. Provider and Blue Lake bush are reliable. Mexican bean beetle shows up in midsummer—hand-pick or cover a late sowing.
