Carrot
Daucus carota
Ohio clay needs loosening or a raised bed. Nantes and Danvers types handle heavier soil better than long Imperators.
- When to plant in Ohio
- Direct sow April–June and again late July for fall
- Harvest window
- June–July; October–November (sweetest after frost)
- Days to maturity
- 60–80
- Spacing
- 2 in. after thinning
- Light
- Full sun, loose soil
How to grow it
Sow shallow, keep the top ½ in. moist for 10–14 days. Thin hard. A July sowing for fall is the flavor prize. Leave late carrots under mulch and dig into December. Avoid fresh manure, which forks roots.
