Tart cherry

Prunus cerasus

Montmorency is the pie cherry of the Midwest. More reliable here than sweet cherries, which struggle with disease.

How to grow it

Self-fertile, so one tree is enough. Birds will strip a ripe tree in two days—net it. Harvest the whole crop when fruit is fully red and slightly soft. Prune lightly after harvest, not in winter, to limit disease.
